Pina Colada is based with Pineapples, which are packed with essential vitamins like vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, phosphorus, and potassium. Pineapple has proven properties to help aid in reducing inflammation of joints, muscles and has fiber. Coconuts, the other half of a Pina Colada, is a Nut Fruit known in the islands to aid in digestion, as coconut oil is one of the richest sources of saturated fat, but that fat is harmless just as omega-3 rich fish oil is. It is essential to the building blocks of skin health, hair and nail growth, and as well serves as an antioxidant.
Limes, slightly sweeter than that of the lemon, with more robust flavor, are associated with the Caribbean. Limes are responsible for saving sailors from scurvy, a vitamin C deficiency. That’s how the term “Limey” was born. Limes are known for their Vitamin C, but also for calcium and folate, a very important vitamin for women. Limes are good for protecting against UV exposure, prevent cancers in the colon, inhibit kidney stones, etc. Lime has properties that stay active for long periods, fighting off free radicals, and may lower cholesterol levels. Of course we mentioned the health benefits of the coconut. The flavor combination is reminiscent of a key lime pie, done in Key West Fashion, though made popular in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. So popular, a song called “Lime and the Coconut” was written to glory in the great flavor combination.
Known as “King of Fruits” mangoes are worldwide known as one of the most popular, high nutrition fruits with a unique fragrance, sweet and tangy taste, a texture similar to a peach, but meatier and healthier. Their constitution is suited for multiple recipes such as salsas, chutneys, preserves, nectars and syrups. Mangoes are a staple of the Caribbean diet. An abundant crop reminiscent of apples, is a flowering fruit which originated from India. The name mango comes from the word “to pickle”, because before refrigeration, pickling was the only way to preserve the fruit.’ Mango contains a variety of phytochemicals and nutrients, polyphenols andomega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, and cartenoids.
